2010 Profile

Second Wind Dreams®, Inc., a 501-c-3 non-profit, made unprecedented impact in its 14th year.   With 2,479 elders served, the dreams were as varied as the dreamers themselves.  A few highlights were:

  • Governor of Kentucky for the day
  • Conduct a symphony
  • Coach a baseball team
  • Contestant on a quiz show
  • Renewing wedding vows
  • On a jury of a murder trial

Skype is has allowed new ways for dreams to come true which has resulted in more reunions and connections than ever before.  Of course, there were celebrity meetings, sporting events and trips.  In fact for the 14th year in a row, “dreams for fun” was the largest category of dreams with “reliving past experiences” in second.

The most moving dreams of all continue to be the ones that simply want someone to visit them.  We all look forward to the day when this is never a dream at all.

The numbers reported below are representative of actual reported outcomes.  However, they are an under representation of the actual impact.  Some members in our organization do not report on every dream, volunteer hour and in-kind donation.  By our estimates, these numbers are about ¾ of the actual figures as based on media and information we receive via conversations and emails that are not backed up by the outcome report.

  • Average age of dreamer                              80
  • In-Kind donations                                  $ 130,542.00
  • Total volunteer hours for dreams             5,449
  • Number of dreams reported                     2,479
  • 2011 Operating Budget                            $ 460,720.00

SWD continues to hold it’s standard of excellence by using .85 cents on every dollar received to continue program services.  Please refer to the GuideStar icon on our website for the latest 990 report.

The Virtual Dementia Tour® Series continues to provide revenue to help the dreams program.  With revenue exceeding $100,000 this past year, it is poised to continue to grow and influence the perception of dementia.

We congratulate the dreamweavers for their persistence in the pursuit of our elder’s dreams.  This commitment furthers the mission to change the negative perception of aging to one that is positive, fun and well adjusted in a society that accepts aging and the beauty it brings.
