Art is the "Angel" of our community. She always has a kind word to say to others and often shows her appreciation with small notes of encouragement. She is the one person you go to if you need a helping hand. She loves nature and being outdoors. Many times I hear her talk about wanting to go to the beach. We have a wonderful day planned for her on the Lake Michigan shoreline with sandy beaches. We will be going to Portage, IN and this area of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore features an enclosed pavilion with an educational classroom, kitchens and restrooms, an accessible loop trail, and fishing pier. The pavilion is not only beautiful, but is Gold LEED certified, meaning that it's built with exemplary environmental design and materials. A new concrete cap and handrails on the breakwater provide easy access for fishing, bird watching, and sightseeing. The Riverwalk closely follows the Burns Waterway (access for nearby marina), then loops back to the pavilion through restored lagoons. A fishing pier over the Burns Waterway is connected to the trail. Though this is not a particularly large portion of the national lakeshore, the dune landscape is scenic and ecologically interesting and is habitat to several threatened plants and other ecologically significant species. What more could a nature lover want?
