Donald worked construction for many years and ran a lot of heavy equipment machines. He shared stories of his years of working with heavy equipment. He said he enjoyed it a lot, even though it was a hard job. From hearing his stories and seeing the sparkle in his eyes when he talked about it, we contacted Todd Taylor at CPI, which is a technology school in the area and arranged for Donald to visit on April 5, 2017.
When we arrived, he was greeted by Mike Noggle, the heavy equipment instructor. He took us on a tour and had students demonstrate some of the machines. Donald also got to do hands-on with Mike in the simulator, which is where the students start out learning how to work the equipment from computerized machines. He loved the opportunity to see how different the equipment is today compared to when he did it. His comment was you wouldn’t mind working 10- to 12-hour days running the new machines.
