After reading about Sleeping Dreams, we decided to go for it and plan a dream for an 86-year-old resident who currently lives on Memory Lane in Crandall Medical Center. Duke Barret, a former Football Coach and his family were treated to an afternoon on the practice field at The University of Mount Union. UMU is home of the proud and successful football team known as the Purple Raider’s. Duke was the head football coach of the Purple Raiders from 1956-1961.On the day of Duke’s dream, the current coach of the Purple Raiders, Vince Kehres, greeted Duke and his family and presented a Purple Raiders visor to Duke. The two coaches enjoyed talking about football and all the changes to the game. The afternoon brought back many fond memories for Duke. A reporter from the local newspaper interviewed Duke and his family adding to the excitement of the afternoon. In addition to attending practice, Duke and his family were treated to dinner at an Applebee’s restaurant located near the UMU, which proudly displays memorabilia of Purple Raider Football. It was an honor for the Copeland Dream Team to help fulfill our first Sleeping Dream. In addition to the employees of Copeland Oaks and Crandall Medical Center, we would like to thank Duke’s family, Coach Vince Kehres and the wonderful staff at UMU that made this dream possible.
