Martha from Allison Park, PA
A Salute to Old Glory

In our Community at Elmcroft of Allison Park, we have a resident by the name of Martha who at 93 has always wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream. We were interested in replacing our displayed flag in front of our facility. Upon hearing, Martha offered to donate a new flag to fly proudly in honor of her deceased husband. Our staff thought it would be appropriate to contact a local Veterans organization and recruit several volunteers to perform a flag raising ceremony on Flag Day. Through word of mouth, interest quickly spread throughout our Community. By the time Flag Day arrived, our group consisted of 40 individuals including staff members, residents, family members, guests and volunteers. Martha was appropriately dressed in red, white and blue apparel and an attractive summer hat. Martha presented the flag to our local Veterans who, in turn, slowly raised the American Flag. Upon doing so, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was recited by all and a Veteran resident sang "God Bless America" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was then sung. Our group convened inside our facility which was decorated in festive Flag Day reds, whites and blues. We enjoyed refreshments and Martha's special request of ice cream sundaes. Not only did the sun shine down brightly on all attendants, but also Martha had truly fulfilled a "Lifelong Dream". Every time we view our American flag we think of Martha and all of our proud Veterans!
