Jean Roepke

For The Love of Diamonds

They always say, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” but for 88-year-old Jean Roepke, the diamond she is most interested in is the diamond covered in dirt and turf. Jean always played softball growing up, staking her claim in right field. When her playing career was over, she did what many former players do and moved into coaching. Jean coached the Boardmanettes Fast Pitch softball team which was comprised of high school-aged girls who played at Boardman Park. When asked about her softball days, Jean said she loved the exercise and the impact she had on the young girls. The SOV-Boardman Dream Team and Brian Campbell, Head Softball Coach at Youngstown State University, was able to get Jean back on the field on Friday, September 18, 2015. Jean and her “teammates”  departed SOV-Boardman at 2:45 PM and headed to the YSU Softball Complex where Jean met the team and posed for pictures prior to the 4:00 PM game against Kent State University.
