Herb Flies Again!

Herb Flies Again!Jerome “Herb” Herbison served his country proudly in the United States AirForce during WWII as an Airplane Commander/Pilot of the B-17 bomber. After the war he enjoyed stunt flying. One of his favorite stories is when his lovely wife, Margaret, went flying with him in an open air cockpit plane. They often teased each other about not being buckled in. He was about to do a forward roll and looked back at Margaret to tease her about being buckled, and her eyes were so big he realized she was NOT kidding this time, she was actually not buckled in! It was a scare that they now laugh about and tell with joy. Margaret says “she probably would have been fine because the g-forces would have held her in, but she’s glad that Herb knew that look on her face!”Herb, his veteran friends, and family were invited to a special luncheon to honor all the veterans, but to also fulfill his dream of flying again. We traveled to a private airport in Lafollette, Tennessee called Deerfield Resort Landing. Pilots were invited from the all over the area to join us. A special guest who addressed the veterans was General Carl Stiner, who served his country in the United States Army for over 35 years and received many metals and honors during his career. He thanked all of the veterans for their service. It was a touching moment with not many dry eyes in the hanger. Bob Lau  took Herb, Margaret, and their daughter, Peggy up in the air in a twin engine Beechcraft Baron for a scenic flight and surprised the crowd with a low altitude flyover by the hanger! The smile of Herb’s face when he slid down the wing of the plane to exit was priceless!Special thanks to Jennifer Selm for coordinating this awesome event, to Bob Lau for taking the Herbison’s flying, to friends at Deerfield Airport for the use of their hangers,  General Stiner and all of the veterans and local pilots for honoring us with their presence, and to Second Wind Dreams and Elmcroft of Halls. It was an honor to be a part of making this dream come true! Susie Rogers, Healthy Lifestyle Director, Elmcroft of Halls
