Notre Dame University holds a special place in the heart Gus. He attended school there for three years, and even proposed to his wife in the Log Chapel there in 1943. In addition, his cousin was a famous running back from Notre Dame. It was Gus's dream to graduate from Notre Dame University, but after his third year of school, he answered the call to serve his country and went on to serve in the Army for three years where he became a colonel. Although he went on to graduate from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and also earned an MBA from Harvard, followed by a Harvard Law Degree in 1941, he always regretted not getting his degree from Notre Dame University. Our Chaplain Mary Tatman and Sister Anne Diederich and the Second Wind Dream Committee wanted to give Gus a chance to graduate from his favorite school. They contacted Notre Dame, Gus's family, and friends and also invited his friends at Laurel Lake Retirement Community to come and share in the celebration. The hardest part of this dream was probably having to keep it a secret from Gus!
