Frank had worked at Finger Lakes Race Track for years. He had many different roles and wore several hats. While he was there he made many friends and considered it his family. His wish was to go back and spend a day at the track. Not only did his wish come true, he also got to spend a day with his wife. It was very therapeutic for both of them. He was welcomed openly by his friends and old co-workers. Many people came up to say hi and shake his hand. He also was given a t-shirt, taken to the winner’s circle, given an autographed photo and given a picture with several jockey signatures. It was an amazing experience, just to see how this wish played out. There is no doubt in my mind that we have a wish angel on our side. The day could not have been more perfect.
Frank has advanced dementia and is lately a man of few words. After the trip, we were on our way back and he stated “ I had a very, very, very good day with my good friends.” It was heartwarming to see how much this dream meant to him. His wife, who had been very nervous about exposing the changed Frank to his old friends was very moved by the experience, as was the CNA who accompanied him. She was able to see how respected and cared for Frank was and to see the person Frank had been prior to his illness.
