When Maria walked in our front door three years ago, she did it with a smile and a story of her husband and the wild turkeys that populated their back yard. Having lived in the neighborhood that our building is located in her entire married life, Maria knew the area and was always ready with a joke or a song to brighten anyone's day.
For three years we have cared for Maria, providing support and compassion for her and her family as Alzheimer's Disease has slowly eroded away her independence. She is now in a wheelchair, and no longer verbalizes her wants and needs.
Looking into Maria's eyes, however, will tell anyone that her bright, vibrant soul is still shining. All one has to do is turn on the radio.
"It's amazing," one staff member says, "She's never spoken a word to me, but today we sang 'You Are My Sunshine' together!"
Reaching out to the community, a local computer repair shop agreed to donate an MP3 player to Maria so she is never without her favorite music!
Filled with classics such as "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and "I Did It My Way", Maria's eyes dance when those headphones cover her ears; she can even be heard singing along!
