“I had no idea.”
“Everyone on the planet needs to experience this!”
“You are an active learner… you walk in the shoes of someone with dementia.”
“It’s a true head-to-toe experience.”
“There is an immediate and lasting change of perception.”
“It will touch your heart.”
These are just some of the quotes we’ve heard about the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), the original, ground-breaking, evidence-based, and scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia. The VDT uses patented sensory tools and instruction based on research conducted by P.K. Beville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and the founder of Second Wind Dreams®. During a Virtual Dementia Tour experience, trained facilitators guide participants outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks and exercises. The Tour enables caregivers to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face, and use the experience to provide better person-centered care. And here’s another special feature… proceeds from the Virtual Dementia Tour are used to fulfill the mission of Second Wind Dreams to make dreams come true for elders who live in long-term care.
The Virtual Dementia Tour Comprehensive Program, a valuable, easy-to-follow experiential training program, is designed for use by care giving facilities and community organizations to help identify with and understand behaviors and needs of people living with dementia. It has been used to train the staff at hospitals, home care agencies, hospices, and colleges and universities. After experiencing the VDT, staff members are able to identify with, and better understand, the behaviors and needs of those with dementia. You can also use the Virtual Dementia Tour to spread awareness of the impact of dementia on everyday life of our seniors. We thank you for your commitment and we look forward to working with you to develop comprehensive staff and community training programs.
The truth is that when dementia strikes, it strikes the whole community, not just the individual.
The Virtual Dementia Tour was also developed to provide a way for members of the community to have a glimpse into the world of dementia… and then develop their own recommendations for their business, family, or anywhere that dementia is experienced. Appropriate participants include:
To help family members learn more about the challenges their loved ones with dementia face, we’ve developed the Virtual Dementia Tour Family Edition, a condensed version of the Tour that was designed specifically for use only in home settings. After experiencing the Family Edition, caregivers report increased sensitivity to the challenges faced by their loved ones with dementia, and often are able to make the needed adjustments to their caregiving… which results in an increase in positive interaction for all. A family guide, written specifically for family caregivers, is included to help care partners navigate the challenges that dementia brings.
We welcome you to join our mission to improve the lives of those with this disease, as well as their caregivers.
